Staining on a chimney breast or ceiling below a valley or abutment usually points to failed lead. Splits, green-grey corrosion or lead that’s visibly lifted away from the joint are also signs it needs attention.
Sheet lead is one of the most durable roofing materials and can last many decades when it’s fitted correctly, though fixings and surrounding mortar can fail before the lead itself does.
A localised split or lifted section can often be repaired without stripping the whole run. Where the lead has corroded or moved throughout, replacing the full length gives a more reliable result.
